What are the functions of a bicycle hub?

The bicycle hub is an important component that connects the bicycle wheel set to the frame (or front fork), and it mainly has the following functions:

Support the Wheel Set

The hub is connected to the frame or front fork through the axle, providing a stable support point for the wheel set, enabling the wheel set to maintain its correct position and ensuring the riding stability of the bicycle. At the same time, it can also bear various forces from the road surface, including the vertical gravitational force, impact force, as well as the horizontal frictional force, etc., ensuring that the wheel set can operate normally under different road conditions.

Enable the Rotation of the Wheel Set

Bearings are installed inside the hub, and these bearings allow for smooth relative rotation between the axle of the hub and the wheel set. When the bicycle is ridden, the axle of the hub remains relatively stationary, while the wheel set rotates at a high speed around the axle, thus enabling the bicycle to move forward. High-quality hub bearings can reduce the friction during rotation, improve the riding efficiency, and make riding easier.

Transmit Power

For the hub of the driving wheel (usually the rear wheel), it also plays an important role in transmitting power. During the riding process, the force from the pedals is transmitted to the sprocket (or freewheel) on the hub through the chain, and then the hub transmits the power to the wheel set, causing the wheel set to rotate and propel the bicycle forward. Therefore, the strength and rigidity of the hub are crucial for the effective transmission of power. If the structure of the hub is not strong enough, it may deform or be damaged during the power transmission process, affecting the riding performance.

Mount Accessories

The hub provides mounting positions for some bicycle accessories. For example, the brake disc of the disc brake system is usually mounted on the hub, and the braking function is achieved by the brake caliper applying pressure to the brake disc. In addition, some bicycle speed sensors, odometer sensors, etc. can also be installed on the hub, and relevant data can be obtained by sensing the rotation of the hub, providing information for the rider.
